Wreaths were
cast at sea and a memorial garden was unveiled
on Sunday in events worldwide to remember the
more than
1,5

people who
died in the sinking of the Titanic ocean liner
exactly a century ago.
In Belfast, the city that built the Titanic, a
memorial garden containing the first-ever
monument to contain all the victims' names was
unveiled during a commemorative service attended
by about
300
members of the
public. [..] And in Halifax, the Canadian port
city from where ships sailed to retrieve bodies
from the icy Atlantic waters following the
sinking on April
15,
1912, and where 150

marchers carried
battery-powered candles and followed a
horse-drawn carriage bearing a casket, stopping
at some Titanic landmarks. Warren Ervine, a
geological engineer whose uncle Albert at the
age of

was the
youngest member of the Titanic crew, was among
the participants. "My father was always very
sad," Ervine recalled. "Like people coming back
from the war, they did not want to talk about
it. I did not even know he (uncle Albert) was a
crew member until
10
years ago. I
looked for him on the passenger list." At 12:27

Sunday, the place fell silent to observe a
moment of silence to mark the time when the
last wireless telegraph message from the
Titanic was received in Nova Scotia. Afterward,
bells rang from four churches where the
ceremonies for the dead were held in 1912.

Passengers on a Titanic memorial cruise have
been marking the 100th anniversary of the
disaster with a ceremony at the site of the
sinking. Rev Huw
Mosford held a short service on the MS Balmoral
to remember the
1,512
people killed, after the vessel
reached the fateful spot in the Atlantic
overnight.
The
1,309
passengers of the ship -
including descendants of the victims -
heard the captain make an announcement before an emotional
minute's silence was held.
It was
2.20am on April 15, 1912,

he 100th anniversary was
also marked in
Northern
Ireland and in the Irish
Republic, where many of the victims were from.
The largest commemoration took place
north of the Irish border.
Thousand of people attended or listened
to a service of remembrance at Belfast
Bell fast
City Hall, which featured another
minute's silence. Lord
Mayor Niall O Donnghaile unveiled a new section
of the city's long-established Titanic memorial
garden. It includes the first monument in the
world to list all

victims.[..]
South of the border, in Lahardane, or Addergoole,
County Mayo, villagers organised a church bell
ringing overnight.
The tiny parish suffered the greatest
proportionate loss -
11
residents died in the maritime
disaster. [..] Belfast
recently opened a new £

the largest in the world.
