With severe bite wounds a man in New York has survived his leap into the tiger enclosure at the

BronX Zoo.

As the Zoo Director Jim Breheny (local time) told the U.S. broadcaster CNN, the man jumped out of the monorail of the zoo over the railing of the enclosure. The tiger had bitten him several times, and only receded from his victim, as security guards sprayed him with a fire extinguisher. According to the New York Fire Department, the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

"The tiger has not done anything wrong,"

said Breheny.

A police spokesman said to the U.S. news portal "ABCNews.com," the man had indicated to the investigators that he "jumped out of the desire to touch the animal. It definitely was not a suicide attempt." The man was stroking the tiger, while the latter had dragged him through the enclosure. To stroke the animal was a "heart's desire" of the man, the police spokesman said.
